Babies can Immediately Hear with a BAHA without Surgery

Operation Takes Place not
Earlier than three Years of Age

A surgery to place the titanium implant in the bone of the skull is not done until the child is about three years old. First, the bone of the skull must have a required thickness adapted for an approximately 3 mm long implant placed approximately 1.5—2 mm into the bone of the skull.

A Softband can be used before Surgery

If the child is a candidate for BAHA it may hear immediately as soon as the hearing loss is identified, at the age of only a couple of days to a few months. The BAHA processor or processors may be attached to a snap coupling of plastic attached to a softband fitted around the child´s head.

This means that the child will be able to hear early and do not lose valuable time in hearing and speech development when the brain is most receptive and developable ie under two years of age.

You can as a parent test how it is to hear with a BAHA by holding a BAHA sound processor on your own skull!
